After bariatric surgery, you lose
not only fat but many other things as well. As your stomach will be much
smaller than it was previously after the surgery. So you have to eat a smaller
amount of food. In order to get stay healthy, you need to focus on consuming
foods that are rich in vitamins, minerals, and proteins.
Your doctor will apparently provide
you with a diet to follow, and it’s normal to get confused. So, we have
mentioned five types of foods you have to avoid after bariatric surgery.
1. Food with Empty Calories -
Empty calories are considered as
the calories that give little or no nutritional value at all. After bariatric
surgery your stomach has been decreased in size, such sort of foods should be
avoided. Multiple types of junk food, candy, chips, pretzels, crackers, and
pastries, have no calories. If you allow this food, you could become
undernourished.
2. High-Fat Foods -
Eating high-fat foods after
bariatric surgery, you may suffer from called dumping syndrome. In dumping
syndrome, your stomach is dumped into your colon just after you eat. When this
happens, you may feel nauseous, or break out in a cold sweat, and even vomit.
Also, you have to stay away from anything that’s fried with oil or butter.
3. Alcohol -
Most types of alcohol are high in
calories and have low nutritional value. By drinking unnecessary liquids you
will just fill your stomach with toxic things. Instead, you must fulfill your
stomach with foods that contain vitamins and minerals.
4. High-Starch Carbs -
Foods which contain high starch
carbs such as bread, rice, and pasta become a sticky paste when chewed. Some
people even face difficulty swallowing that sticky food right after the
surgery, particularly after bariatric surgery patients are not advised to drink
any sort of liquid with meals. There’s also a risk that these foods may block
the opening to your stomach, causing nausea and vomiting. So, better to avoid
them!
5. High-Fiber Veggies -
Although many vegetables have a
good amount of nutrients, there are some vegetables that can cause difficulties
right after the surgery. Vegetables rich in fiber are hard to digest, so they
must be avoided.
